Social media has recently been identified as one of a journalist’s most powerful, impacting tools. Modern technology allows anyone, anywhere to be a reporter. The average citizen can capture in seconds what seasoned journalists used to take hours, if not longer, to cover. The emergence of this new machine has changed the modern lifestyle, and has revolutionized the conventional journalist.

On April 16, 12 publications students from Howell North traveled to Denver for the 2015 JEA/NSPA Spring National Convention. Students from all over the country come to the convention to participate in write off competitions, attend sessions led by professionals and advisers, and award ceremonies, all with other students from around the country.
Sophomore Blake Coonrad and senior Andrew Shannon have been organizing and scheduling the upcoming charity race “A Race to Remember STL”. A large percentage of the proceeds from the 5K race will go to the Alzheimer’s Association. The race will take place on Saturday, June 27, at the Lakeside 370 Park in St.
FHSD has a school cancellation procedure that has recently come under scrutiny by the FHN community. When inclement weather affects the road conditions within district boundaries, the District must make a judgement call on whether or not a weather event creates a significant risk to student and staff safety.

On Thursday, Sept. 10, at 10 a.m. , FHN Head Principal Andy Downs and Associate Principal Katie Greer made an announcement to the administration and. guidance staff that there were 4 FHN students named 2014 National Merit Semifinalists. Seniors Tim Xiang, Daniel Bodden, Emily Coonrad, and Adam Cole were all named Semifinalists.

The final day of the Midwest Education Technology Conference (METC) kicked off Wed., Feb. 12, with a keynote from Dr. Lodge McCammon on flipping the classroom. The keynote started at 8 a.m. and included videos, songs, and choreographed dancing. McCammon covered transparency and accountability in the classroom, and ways in which teachers can better their teaching techniques.

FBLA is selling “KnightGear” apparel for any FHN student to purchase. Any funds raised by. Jimmy Higgins, Michelle Mottin, Clayton Kohler and Autumn Lavezzi pose for a photo with various other FBLA members. KnightGear will go towards to the FBLA and to the individual seller. The prices range from $17-$37 depending on the apparel.

DECA members took a field trip Tuesday to City Hall in St. The events included a guest speaker seminar, a trip to Mid Rivers Mall, and business ethics activities. Any DECA member was welcome, and the cost was $10. The members even got to eat lunch at the Mall, and had the opportunity to go shopping.
After the announcement of Head Principal Darlene Jones’s retirement, and Assistant Principal Downs was selected as the 2013-14 school year’s head principal, two positions remain empty for the coming year. Assistant Principal Tony Grippi will also retire at the end of this year. That leaves two vacant administrative positions open.
