On Thursday, Sept. 10, 4 FHN students were named 2014 National Merit Semifinalists. Seniors Tim Xiang, Daniel Bodden, Emily Coonrad, and Adam Cole were all. named Semifinalists. Students qualify as Semifinalists based on their scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
FHN’s seniors signed with colleges offering athletic scholarships at the National Signing Day event for FHN on Feb. 4 after school. The Livestream video of the event can be found below, along with a list of all of the seniors mentioned, and the universities with which they are signing.
Online registration will be open from Jan. 12 to Jan. 22. Students are encouraged to register earlier during the registration period to avoid high traffic and possible complications closer to the close of registration. At an FHN faculty meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 7, Laura Montgomery was named the 2014-15 teacher of the year. Spanish Teacher Brian Santos created a video showcasing Montgomery’s selection as Teacher of the Year, and her dedication to teaching. That video can be found below. “It’s a tremendous honor because it’s an award bestowed upon you by your peers,” Montgomery said.
On Dec. 1, 2014, FHSD schools remained open despite inclement weather which struck in the early morning hours. According to KSDK, there were 283 closings in the STL area. Students, parents and staff are left with a decision, brave the icy roads, or stay home to wait out the dangerous weather.
This week is National Education Week, and KOE is celebrating by asking each teacher to take a selfie with a friend, a class or alone, and send the picture to yourfhn@fhntoday.com. Teachers and students can vote on the best selfie throughout the day, and KOE will give the winner a wonderful treat.

Not only has it caused games to be. delayed and rescheduled, but some games and activities have been completely canceled. Administrative Assistant of Activities Arlene Kearns says the heat has caused a lot of schedule changes concerning school sports and activities, but it’s for the best.

Black and Gold Day will start at 3:00 p.m. and conclude around 8:30 p.m. This will be the first year that the turf field will be available for student use.
Knight’s Painting II class has the freedom and flexibility to be creative and decide what they want to paint. They usually have objectives that cover different styles of art and a certain subject to portray, but no strict guidelines as to how or what they paint. Today, Knight’s class is working on realism in their pieces.
Student Council is holding elections today, April 17, in all lunches, for students in grades 9-11 to vote for StuCo Officers. Students can vote for one candidate for each position. Students need to have their school I.D. in order to vote. Bios are available of each candidate. Winners will be announced May 1st.
“Austin was important to his friends, so it’s important to honor him,” Special Education teacher Jan Lindmeier said. “As long as he would’ve been here, we’re going to make sure he’s honored.”. Austin Jaros-Riley, a student at FHN, passed away of Fanconi Anemia last year. This year would’ve been Austin’s senior year.
The annual Spirit Meter has been a tradition at FHN Pep Assemblies for years, and is a great way to measure which class has the most spirit. We’ve made a list of some ways that you can help your class get the upper-hand at this year’s Pep Assembly. Scream Your Hardest- A great way to help your class win is also the most obvious- scream as loud as you can!
This afternoon in 7th hour, publications adviser Aaron Manfull won a $1,000 award and was acknowledged by Peabody Energy as. a Leader in Education. FHN Principals Andy Downs, Jack Ameis and English department head Shelly Parks accompanied Peabody Program Director Maureen Moore in awarding Manfull.
